Public lecture on “Introduction to nuclear security”

Department “National and Regional Security” and the Center for Strategic Studies in Defense and Security UNWE offered to teachers and students a more specialized public lecture, which this time was dedicated to the subject of nuclear security. It was given by Dr. Sarah Kuchesfahani by the Center for International Trade and Security at the University of Georgia, USA. The public lecture is part of preparations for an international master program “Nuclear Security” in the University, which is expected to start next year.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, Head of Department “National and Regional Security” presented guest lecturer Dr. Sarah Kuchesfahani and her colleagues – Karen Cruz, business manager of the Center for International Trade and Security at the University of Georgia and Ira Plaks – student Center.

Lecturer Dr. Sarah Kuchesfahani talked about consistently the concept nuclear security, prevention, detection and liability for theft, nuclear sabotage, illegal transfer and others. Nuclear security is defined as a direction in international security and is now developing programs to improve the chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear culture, she said.

In her presentation Dr. Kuchesfahani highlighted a nuclear-free zones in the world, the main threats to nuclear security – nuclear terrorism, malicious use of radioactive substances, theft and sale of radioactive materials. She highlighted the steps necessary to strengthen nuclear security.

Short presentation made Karen Cruz and Ira Plaks. They shared their experience of training and research in the field of nuclear security.

The public lecture was held with great interest by teachers and students III and IV course of “Economics of Defense and Security”.
